Naraya in Kusatsu
Lanterns at the doorway, carefully tended hot springs and an evening near Yubatake.

The wooden sign, white entrance curtains and hanging lanterns make Naraya feel part of Kusatsu’s hot-spring streetscape, not separate from it. Stay here for the contrast between a short outing around nearby Yubatake and time inside the inn: a bath, seasonal dishes and an unhurried evening. Its central setting is the attraction—not a promise that every room has its own hot spring.
THE IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
Shared onsen, a paid reservable private bath and an in-room hot-spring bath are three different arrangements. Decide which you need before selecting the room.
01 / ROOM CHOICE
Choose the room by its name
The official room page identifies Iwakagami as a maisonette with a semi-open-air bath fed by the Shirahata hot spring and views towards Yubatake. This room does not accept children. Match the exact room name, occupancy rules and sleeping arrangement to your party.
Minezakura also has Yubatake views, but a view does not establish that its bathroom is equivalent to Iwakagami’s hot-spring bath. For other rooms, check the bed or futon arrangement, bathroom facilities and stairs individually.
PHOTO & ROOM CHECK
Property photographs below are not assigned to a confirmed named guestroom. A “Japanese-style” label does not by itself promise raised beds or a private onsen.
02 / BATHING
Understand the bath arrangements
Look beyond the bath photograph’s timber beams and stone edges: part of Naraya’s character is the work behind the water. The inn draws from the Shirahata source and describes how its yumori, or hot-spring caretakers, manage the cooling and flow before the water reaches the baths. That makes bathing central to the stay rather than an extra facility to fit in at bedtime. Shared onsen and paid reservable private baths remain different arrangements; choose according to the privacy you need.
Private-bath bookings are taken on arrival, rather than guaranteed in advance. Ask about the current charge and available times when checking in. If having your own bath throughout the stay is essential, confirm an appropriate named room instead of depending on a private-bath slot.
03 / MEALS
Compare the meal plan, not the picture
A bath followed by dinner gives the evening a natural centre. Naraya describes seasonal menus using local ingredients and the flavours of Gunma; the photograph shows how varied shapes, colours and small dishes turn the table into part of the experience. The inn’s dining spaces use chairs and tables. Check the selected plan’s dinner and breakfast inclusions and let the inn confirm the dining venue—neither a food photograph nor a lower headline room price tells you what is included.
Check any arrival deadline attached to dinner. If dietary requirements determine whether you can stay, contact the inn before reserving rather than assuming the pictured meal can be adapted.
04 / ARRIVAL
Plan the last part of the journey
Naraya is at 396 Kusatsu, Gunma. The inn describes a five-minute walk from Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal, not from a railway station. Use the Tokyo–Kusatsu transport guide to plan the journey before that final walk.
The official FAQ gives check-in at 15:00 and check-out at 11:00. Expedia currently displays an earlier check-in time, so use your confirmed plan and clarify any earlier arrival directly with Naraya. The inn allows luggage drop-off before check-in; this is not early room access.
MOBILITY CHECK
Unavoidable stairs remain even where there is an elevator. The official FAQ says wheelchairs and wheeled walking aids cannot be used inside. Discuss your needs with the inn before booking.

06 / AROUND THE INN
Make time for the town
Keep the first afternoon simple: settle your luggage, understand the bathing arrangements and take a short town walk before dinner. Back indoors, Naraya’s tatami-lined corridors and first-floor Kissako café and bar offer another way to slow down. Treat café or bar orders as separate purchases unless your booked plan explicitly includes them; confirm current opening times at the inn. Explore the Kusatsu destination guide or follow the Yubatake and Netsunoyu walking guide for a nearby outing.
