PRACTICAL GUIDE / TRANSPORT
Tokyo to Kusatsu without a car
Compare the train-and-bus route with a direct coach.
Choose the direct highway coach if avoiding a change matters most. Choose the Kusatsu-Shima limited express from Ueno plus a local bus if you prefer a mostly rail journey. Both routes finish at Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal; the town is not reached by train alone.
Locate the transfer and arrival points
Compare the JR bus stop at Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi with Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal. The pins do not show the bus route.

START WITH YOUR ARRIVAL
Compare the journey for your actual date, then work back from your accommodation’s check-in and dinner conditions. Add the trip to your Tokyo departure point and the final walk or transfer from Kusatsu’s terminal.
01 / ROUTE CHOICE
Choose between two useful routes

Train + local bus
ONE CHANGE
Ueno → Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi → Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal.
- The Kusatsu-Shima limited express normally starts at Ueno. Tokyo-origin trains are special services; use the station on your ticket.
- Train seats are reserved. The onward local bus is not reservable; queue and keep a later service as a fallback.
- You handle your luggage at the station change.
Direct highway coach
NO VEHICLE CHANGE
Tokyo or Busta Shinjuku → Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal.
- Choose the precise departure point and service before reserving. “Direct” does not mean non-stop.
- The coach avoids a transfer, but road traffic can extend the journey. Leave margin before a fixed dinner time.
- Check luggage limits, payment deadline and boarding instructions for the selected service.
No date-specific fare, departure time or seat availability is quoted here. Compare the full rail fare plus limited-express charge and local bus against the exact coach offer.
A third option is the shinkansen to Karuizawa followed by a bus to Kusatsu. Consider it when Karuizawa fits your wider route, rather than assuming the faster train makes the whole journey quicker. Match the rail arrival to the Kusakaru Kotsu timetable.
02 / TRANSFER & ARRIVAL
Make the transfer and arrival straightforward

1. Before leaving Tokyo
Check the station and departure printed on your ticket. Save the booking instructions and return timetable. The Kusatsu-Shima has no unreserved car, so reserve the train rather than expecting to find an unreserved seat.
2. At Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi
Follow signs for the bus to Kusatsu Onsen and join the queue. The local bus is first come, first served; a full bus or a major train delay can change your connection. Identify a later bus before committing to a tight arrival.
NAMES TO RECOGNISE
長野原草津口 — Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi
草津温泉 — Kusatsu Onsen
On the JR local bus, pay when alighting. Suica and PASMO are accepted on regular services, but some extra buses may not accept them. Carry cash as a backup and follow the operator’s current payment instructions.
3. At Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal
Collect your bags and follow your accommodation’s directions. Confirm any hotel pickup, luggage storage or late arrival directly. These are property-specific arrangements, not services included with the bus ticket.

03 / BEFORE DEPARTURE
Check luggage and tickets before booking
- Rail tickets: before paying, check whether your selected rail product includes the basic fare as well as the limited-express charge, and whether travel uses paper tickets or the specified e-ticket process. Keep the product’s fulfilment instructions with the reservation. JR East e-ticket fulfilment instructions
- Passes: check route coverage and seat-reservation rules; do not assume every bus is included.
- Coach bags: review the baggage conditions for your booking. Keep valuables, fragile items and power banks out of the luggage compartment.
- Transfers: pack a bag you can lift yourself and confirm early hotel storage before planning a walk on arrival.
- Return journey: check the timetable, cancellation conditions and bus service notices. Keep essential medicine and travel documents with you.
04 / AFTER ARRIVAL
Let the journey give way to the town

After dropping your bags, leave time for an easy walk around Yubatake rather than planning an immediate timed activity. Our Kusatsu guide connects the arrival with places to explore and questions to ask about your stay.
Considering a central ryokan?
Naraya describes a five-minute walk from the bus terminal. Its room, bathing and mobility conditions still need to fit your trip; a convenient walk is only one part of the decision.
