In central Shibu Onsen, Nagano, step from narrow streets into Kokuya’s warm wooden interiors. Tatami seating, a choice of bathing spaces and dinner at the inn turn the stay into more than a base for sightseeing. Choose your preferred bedding, then decide between an open-air bath attached to your room and the ryokan’s shared or private-use baths. Leave time to wander the town.

01 / GUIDE
Why Kokuya works for a first ryokan stay
Our pick is for travellers who want their accommodation to be part of the trip, rather than somewhere to return to only at bedtime. The inn dates to 1625, draws on six spring sources and describes its baths as using free-flowing hot-spring water. English-speaking staff and a station shuttle can make the arrival less daunting.
Leave breathing room in your itinerary. An afternoon arrival gives you time to settle in, ask how the baths work and take a short stroll before dinner. Shibu’s town baths are a separate experience from Kokuya’s own baths: ask reception about access and current arrangements rather than assuming every bath follows the same rules.
02 / GUIDE
Choose privacy and sleeping arrangements separately
“Private bath” can mean exclusive use of a bath elsewhere in the inn, or a bath belonging to your room. Book a category explicitly described as having an en-suite open-air bath if the latter is essential.

A guest-room example with beds; match the bedding and bath details to the exact category you book.
A bath just for your room
What to choose or check: A category expressly sold with an open-air bath
Do not assume: That every room has one
Occasional privacy
What to choose or check: Standard room plus the inn’s private-use bath arrangements
Do not assume: That every private-use bath is free or available whenever you arrive
Beds rather than floor bedding
What to choose or check: The selected room’s bed/futon description and occupancy
Do not assume: That a gallery photograph guarantees your bedding

If stairs, floor seating or getting up from a futon would be difficult, contact the inn before choosing a room. Ask for the route from reception to that specific room and the baths you expect to use. A general room request is not a confirmed allocation.

Make time for the baths
A bathing area at Kokuya. This image does not establish a named bath, private-use allocation or an in-room facility.
The inn has communal bathing areas and separate private-use options, including free and paid arrangements. Ask which baths need a reservation, which are available when unoccupied, and what any fee covers. Check the entrance signs each time: the men’s and women’s bathing areas rotate.
For a first visit, a useful reception question is: “Which bath can we use together, and how do we reserve it?” That is more precise than asking whether the hotel has a private onsen.

Choose your dinner and breakfast plan

A meal example; ingredients and serving arrangements vary. Confirm what your booked plan includes.
Kokuya describes seasonal Japanese meals using ingredients from the Shinshu region. Check dinner and breakfast inclusions on the actual rate you select. Tell the inn about food allergies in advance and obtain its response before relying on an accommodation request.
The official information gives 19:00 as the latest dinner starting time and asks late arrivals to contact the inn. Build your travel day around the agreed arrival and dinner arrangements; do not assume a delayed train automatically extends service.
05 / GUIDE
Arriving without a car
Travel via Nagano and the Nagano Electric Railway to Yudanaka Station. Kokuya advertises a complimentary station shuttle from 15:00 and asks guests to provide their arrival time in advance. Confirm pickup details directly; do not treat the shuttle as an all-day, turn-up service.
The official check-in time is 15:00 and check-out is 10:00. The address is 2200 Hirao, Yamanouchi, Nagano. Check current train connections and your booking’s arrival instructions before departure. For a snow-monkey excursion, plan transport and walking time separately from the station-to-ryokan transfer.

Questions before booking
Can I bathe with tattoos?
We have not confirmed a current tattoo policy for Kokuya. Ask the inn about the specific shared or private-use bath you intend to use; do not infer permission from the availability of private baths.
Is a private bath hot-spring water?
The inn says its baths use free-flowing hot-spring water. Still, distinguish an en-suite open-air bath from private use of a separate bath, and match the description to your chosen room or bathing arrangement.
Are dinner and breakfast included?
Only if included in your selected plan. Compare the meal description, arrival requirements and cancellation terms before paying.
07 / GUIDE
Plan the rest of your stay
Jigokudani Yaen-Koen can add a wildlife-focused outing to a Shibu stay: the interest is watching Japanese macaques interact in their mountain environment, not simply obtaining a hot-spring photograph. The monkeys are wild, so appearances and bathing are not guaranteed. Plan the park transfer and unpaved walking approach separately from Kokuya’s station pickup, check current conditions, and follow the park’s rules against feeding or touching the animals.
Explore Chubu and Nagano, or browse Japan Trip Info’s ryokan guides to compare the kind of stay you want. For Kokuya, settle the room, bathing and dinner choices first, then plan your time around Shibu.
08 / GUIDE
Ready to choose your room?
Compare the bath wording, bedding, meals and cancellation conditions together. Choose a clearly specified open-air-bath category if having your own bath is the reason for your trip.
