At Shikairou, a noodle lunch comes with a sense of occasion. The fifth-floor restaurant looks over Nagasaki harbour, bringing the city’s waterfront into the meal. Come for champon or sara udon, and give yourself time for the setting as well as the food.

Why choose this restaurant?

Shikairou traces its founding to 1899 and credits its founder, Chen Ping Shun, with creating champon for Nagasaki’s Chinese students and residents. Eating here connects a familiar local dish with the restaurant that tells that origin story. Shikairou’s own history

The restaurant describes its champon through chicken and pork-bone broth and ingredients from the surrounding land and sea. Its account of thick-noodle sara udon explains how fried noodles absorb a smaller amount of broth. One promises a substantial soup; the other brings the flavour into softer noodles on a plate.

For the wider comparison of soup, thin crisp noodles and thick sara udon, read our Nagasaki champon and sara-udon guide. Here, choose the dish that appeals, then enjoy it in this particular waterfront setting.

A meal above the waterfront

The glass-fronted, sea-facing dining room is on the fifth floor, with Nagasaki harbour and Mount Inasa across the water. Matsugae Wharf lies in front of the building. It is an enticing setting for a leisurely lunch around the southern waterfront.

Nagasaki’s city guide also lists a free Champon Museum on the second floor and a souvenir shop on the first. The museum introduces the dish’s roots and related historical material, offering another reason to explore the building around your meal.

For access between floors, the city guide lists two lifts and a multipurpose toilet on the fourth floor. If you need a particular seating or access arrangement, discuss it with the restaurant before your visit.

Ordinary dining or a private-room meal?

The regular restaurant does not accept reservations. Private-room bookings are a separate arrangement: at least four people, a course meal and booking at least two business days ahead.

The operator takes reservation enquiries by phone or fax between 10:00 and 17:00, and says it does not accept bookings through websites, apps or reservation agencies. Use its current service information for the contact details and conditions.

Hours and upcoming closures

Restaurant lunch is 11:30–15:00, with last entry at 14:00. Dinner is 17:00–20:00, with last entry at 19:00. Entry may finish earlier when busy.

The operator’s notice lists closures on 11 and 25 November 2026. Check that notice again when choosing your date. The first-floor shop’s hours are 10:00–17:30.

Find the Matsugaemachi building

The address is 4–5 Matsugaemachi, Nagasaki. The city guide places the restaurant at the entrance to Minamiyamate-dori, close to the Oura Cathedral tram stop. This is the southern waterfront, not a restaurant inside Shinchi Chinatown.

Pair the meal with the former foreign settlement and the surrounding harbour area. Our Nagasaki city guide helps connect those parts of the day.

Tell staff about allergies or dietary restrictions before ordering, including questions about broth, noodles, sauce and toppings. The dietary-needs guide can help you prepare them.
