Onomichi: hillside views, shopping lanes and a waterfront afternoon
Rise above the rooftops, browse the shopping streets and leave time beside the channel.

Ropeway tickets and the lower station
Onomichi rewards a day spent moving between two very different perspectives: rooftops and the narrow channel seen from above, then shopfronts and boats at street level.
Start around Onomichi Station, take the ropeway up Mt. Senkoji, and leave time for the shopping streets and waterfront below.
For a gentler day, make the lower town the main event. Browse a few shops, stop for lunch and watch the boats cross the channel. The hillside can be an addition rather than the backbone of your visit.
Find the lower station
The ropeway pin marks the lower station in Nagae. The JR pin marks the Midori no Madoguchi ticket-office point at Onomichi Station, not every station entrance.
The street map loads when it comes into view.

Start with the view

The Mt. Senkoji Ropeway links its lower station in Nagae with the hilltop in about three minutes. It is a satisfying way to see the town open out as you rise: the closely packed streets give way to a broader view of the water and opposite shore.

At the top, spend time at the PEAK observation deck before choosing your way back. A return ropeway ticket keeps the uphill and downhill walking to a minimum. If you choose the hillside paths, wear shoes with good grip and expect slopes and steps.
Winter closure: the operator has announced that the ropeway will not run from 7 to 25 December 2026 for annual maintenance.
Its notice says the hill remains accessible on foot and the PEAK deck remains open; walking is a separate uphill journey, not a replacement accessible transport service. Read the operator’s closure notice.
Ropeway tickets and the lower station
Normal operating hours are 9:00–17:15, with departures every 15 minutes and extra services when capacity is reached. Check the operator’s current notices before heading uphill, particularly when planning a late return. Operating hours.
Adult tickets, including junior-high-school students, cost ¥500 one way or ¥700 return. Child fares are ¥250 one way or ¥350 return. One preschool child travels free per accompanying guardian. Ticket details.
The lower station is at 1-3-3 Nagae, not the hilltop station. Onomichi City describes the walk from JR Onomichi Station as about 15 minutes. Follow the operator’s station access information when choosing a map destination. Station access.
Browse the shopping streets, then turn toward the water

Back below, trade the hill’s wide view for smaller discoveries: a shop window, a lane between buildings, a place to sit with something to eat.
The shopping association highlights the stone-paved lanes of Naka Shopping Street and the resting space around the former chamber of commerce building.
One of those lanes leads toward the waterfront, making it easy to alternate shopping with a look across the channel. Choose a few shops that catch your eye rather than trying to cover the entire district. Explore Naka Shopping Street.
The Naka Shopping Street association lists Thursday as its regular day off; individual shop hours vary.
Leave room for the waterfront
Give the waterfront its own part of the afternoon. A pause beside the channel offers a different rhythm from the hillside: boats moving across the water, buildings on the opposite shore and the town stretching along the coast.
Onomichi is also a starting point for trips toward the Shimanami Kaido islands. If cycling or a ferry journey is your main aim, build the day around that journey rather than adding it after a full town walk. The prefecture’s Onomichi guide introduces the town and island options.
Before you go

Plan your day

- For views: take the ropeway, pause at PEAK, then return to the lower town.
- For browsing and food: focus on the shopping streets and waterfront, with a relaxed lunch stop.
- For the hillside lanes: allow time and energy for steps and slopes, and keep your return transport in mind.
